A Personal Trainer Raises The Bar

Q: When I was at the gym the other day I saw a friend working out with a personal trainer. What is the advantage of using a personal trainer and how can I find one?

A: Part I, the benefits: Personal trainers provide motivation for their clients. They give words of encouragement, notice when you have made new achievements, and push you past the point that you would normally concede. They understand that achieving real results can be difficult and that on some days you may not have as much energy. Some share stories and spend time listening to their clients. This helps to form bonds and gives insight into what you are going through and what stressors could make your weight-loss process more difficult.

Qualified personal trainers can offer expertise. A lot of them have spent years in school and workshops, and have had many hours of hands-on, specialized experience. The average person does not have time to study and learn the complex anatomy of the human body and its functions regarding exercise (correct form, breathing, and speed). Working with a personal trainer give you an edge, so that you train the right muscles with the proper form at the right intensity.

Reliable personal trainers provide valuable accountability. How many times have we all made excuses for not working out? When you employ the services of a personal trainer you typically have scheduled appointments. You go beyond a commitment to yourself and make a promise to someone else. It is human nature to feel bad about leaving someone waiting for you or not showing up at all. People look forward to their time with their trainer and are reminded of the positive effect faithful exercise will yield.

Part II, selecting a trainer: When evaluating personal trainers, consider these questions: Do they have a current certification through a nationally recognized organization? Are they certified in CPR? What actual experience do they possess? Do they have references? Do they carry liability insurance? Do they give you a medical questionnaire and know how to help you with health concerns? How do their fees compare to others in the industry? Do they provide you with clear coaching and instructions? Do you think they can help you to stay motivated?

In Tallahassee there are a number of options for personal training. First, there are private trainers who come to your house for around $35 to $60 per hour. Second, personal training studios provide one-on-one training or up to four people in small groups. Each session can range from between $8 to $60 per hour. (Some studios offer membership opportunities, while others charge one month at a time.) Third, group training programs usually train from six to 20 people at a time and charge about $20 and up per hour. Finally, multiservice gyms are another source of personal training. Generally, there is an enrollment fee and a membership cost. Then, personal training is considered an additional charge at around $35 to $65 per hour.

We look for experts to help us in all areas of life. You do not have to go at it alone when it comes to your fitness. Do not believe all the fad pills, diets and quick fixes. The best way to achieve good health is to do it the right way with proper exercise and nutrition. A motivating, qualified personal trainer can help you along the way.
